Cypress avenues, hilltop villages and pecorino at the source.
Request this tourVal d'Orcia is the Tuscany of the imagination — the rolling hills, the lone cypress on the horizon, the small towns built from honey-coloured stone. A UNESCO World Heritage landscape that you ride through, not past.
We start early so we can take our time. By midday we are tasting pecorino in Pienza, by sunset we are climbing back through Siena. A long, complete day.
A suggested route. Every itinerary can be adapted to your pace, your appetite and the weather of the day.
Morning briefing, coffee and route check. Helmets fitted, engines warmed.
We skirt Siena on the way south, with a short stop for a glance at the Piazza del Campo from above the city walls.
Entering Val d'Orcia proper. The little garden of Horti Leonini, a coffee under the porticoes, photos of the famous cypress hill.
The Renaissance town of Pope Pius II. We park outside the walls and walk the main street. Pecorino tasting at one of the historic cheese-makers — five aged varieties, a glass of Vino Nobile.
A small restaurant just outside the walls. Pici cacio e pepe, slow-cooked beef, panna cotta with figs.
A short ride to the home of Brunello. We stop at a producer outside town for a tasting of three vintages.
We take the historic Via Cassia north, passing Buonconvento and dropping into Florence with the sun behind us.
